Role: Service Manager

Job type: 2 years fixed term contract (extension subject to funding)

Hours: 2 days/16 hours per week.  (Tuesday and Thursday with possibility of a 3rd day, subject to funding)

Salary: £15,600 P.A.

Applications are invited for this new role within Mankind of a Service Manager to support the strategic development of Mankind services and manage the operational work of both the individual counselling and group work teams. This role has no direct clinical contact work except in the form of initial client telephone screening calls.


Since 2000 Mankind has been offering services to men to assist them in the recovery from sexual abuse trauma. In February 2017, following extensive consultation and analysis of Mankind outcome data we introduced a new formalised programme of recovery:

Now that this programme is embedded in the organisation, we are looking to introduce a new level of management in the form of a Services Manager as part of a planned series of changes in our infrastructure to support the continued development of the organisation.

Main Duties

  • To support the management team with the strategic development of Mankind counselling services, including increasing service provision through non-direct online services.
  • To review and develop Mankind policies and procedures in relation to counselling services to ensure that we adhere to current legislation, local and national policies and strategies and BACP guidance.
  • To attend multi-agency meetings as the Mankind lead for counselling services.
  • To compile data for reports with Mankind CEO for funders relating to Mankind counselling services.
  • To further existing partnership arrangements, and develop new partnership arrangements, with statutory, voluntary and private organisations.
  • To undertake first stage client intake screening calls to assess suitability for service.
  • To line manage and develop the counselling/group services staff as required, including review and update of Staff Handbook.
  • To carry out Performance Reviews for the counselling services staff as required.
  • To liaise with Mankind CEO and Supervisors regarding on-going CPD for counselling services staff.
  • To manage waiting lists and to ensure that resources are allocated according to service need.
  • To manage various web-based organisational systems (e.g. G Suite, Trello, our website CMS, and our custom client management app)
  • To contribute to the development and delivery of training and workshops as appropriate
  • To carry out any other duties as may be required by Mankind.

Person Specification


  • At least two years’ experience in a management position, including performance management.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of therapeutic services.
  • Good knowledge of the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) national strategy and its implications for male survivors seeking services.
  • Understanding of the issues for male survivors and their specific needs.
  • Ability to manage own time and workload and that of other staff.
  • Experience of working in the health and social care sector.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and orally.
  • To be highly computer literate, self-teaching, and confident learning new systems 
  • To be familiar and proficient with outcome monitoring systems used in the sector.


  • Diploma in Management at level 5 or above.
  • Counselling or Psychotherapy qualification.
  • Experience of working in a therapeutic environment.
  • Experience of working in the health, social care or 3rd sector.
  • Experience of G Suite user and app management.
